  • Back on Track

Authored by Professor James Woudhuysen, a world-renowned professor of forecasting and innovation, and sponsored by Amadeus, a leading travel technology partner and transaction processor for the global travel and tourism industry, the report aims to help the rail industry understand how outsourcing can help drive modernisation so that the objectives laid out in the EC Whitepaper - ‘Roadmap to a single European transport network’ - can be achieved.

Back on Track argues that the rail industry, which has long been held back by legacy IT systems, should consider adopting next generation IT solutions, similar to those used by other travel companies such as airlines,

    • to raise productivity,
    • cut costs, and
    • improve the customer experience.

The concept of an outsourced community platform, a shared system used by rival rail companies to manage customer processing, means rail companies would benefit from the latest technology whilst remaining free to innovate and differentiate.
This approach would see the rail experience transformed, allowing for personalised journeys, intermodal and rail to rail connections, the selling of ancillary services and multiple options for ticketing.

  • The Changing Face of Rail Travel

This report is a first for Amadeus and we believe a first for the industry as well. The aim was to take an in-depth look at the changes taking place within the rail industry at this point in time, and the challenges that go with them, focusing on the European and North American markets.

Findings clearly show that deregulation and increased competition will create many new challenges for rail in the future.

    • Rail companies can see increased demand from both leisure and business travellers, with business travellers turning more and more away from short-haul air travel to railways.
    • Deregulation provides opportunities for expansion – but new entrants to the market could pose challenges for established carriers.
    • High-speed rail is increasingly recognised as an alternative to air travel, and there is significant investment in the development of high-speed networks worldwide.

    Main issues and challenges
Deregulation will increase competition between rail companies and on routes – and new entrants to market might adopt previously-unseen business models. Rail companies need to move from a nationalistic distribution model to an industry-wide solution. They also have to make the customer their priority – and improve the overall travel experience.

Rail industry actors: In their words…
“The report reads like a “State of the Union” on the rail travel industry providing a broad perspective on the challenges facing the rail industry and identifying key areas of opportunity for rail companies to pursue.” Via Rail Canada
“Amadeus has hit the nail on the head with its report. The conclusions are 100% correct, particularly the suggestions on industry-wide solutions, standardisation and the future requirements of e-ticketing.” Dutch Rail

  • Cross-Sell Your Way to Profit

More and more travel players are expanding their offers to include supplementary third-party ancillary products and services to help and inspire today’s travellers while earning attractive profits.

    Travel players’ DNA is changing.

“Cross-Sell Your Way to Profit – How Travel Suppliers Are Using Third-Party Ancillary Services to Drive New Revenues and Enhance Their Traveler’s Experience" is a Forrester Consulting study commissioned by Amadeus that explores the key trends shaping the future of cross-selling.

The study is based on insights from travel providers from across the globe and centres explicitly on the opportunity presented by “third-party ancillary services”

    Findings from the report include:

    1. Predicted revenues from third-party ancillary sales are set to grow 30% by 2015, 10 times faster than general sales.

    2. Third-party ancillary services will represent 2.5% of total revenues by 2015 – representing $25 million per year for a $1 billion company.

    3. New innovative “extreme” third-party ancillary services on offer by 2020 include:

    - Virtual reality allowing customers to experience airports, hotels, cruise ships or destinations prior to travel

    - Digital concierges on mobile phones to assist with hotel, airport or destination services

    - In-journey spa services

    4. Mobile is expected to have the biggest impact on the types of third-party ancillary services that are offered and how they are sold.
