Welcome to our regular ‘Getting to know’ feature. This time, we catch up with Mirja Sickel, Head of Commercial, in the rail department of Amadeus. Read on to understand how Mirja makes her mission of making rail booking as easier as possible.
What’s your role at Amadeus Rail?
I am working in the rail department at Amadeus as Head of Commercial, where I am responsible for our railway and travel agency customers. With my team, we promote customer centricity and ensure that our organization delivers IT solutions to address our customer's business needs with the highest quality standards.
We connect railways with a worldwide travel seller network, and we help travel sellers to sell more rail trips to their customers. We help railways to modernize their Reservation and Inventory Management systems and drive increased profitability for them.
How does your role help make rail booking easier?
In my role, I am responsible for defining the right commercial model and strategy, that will, together with our rail technology solutions, help us achieve our goal of making rail booking easier and improving the rail customer experience.
What has been the most rewarding moment of working for Amadeus Rail?
My most rewarding moments are when I can explain to my friends and family what we are doing in the rail department: establishing rail booking solutions that will make possible to book rail as easy as flights.
Many of my German friends don't understand why they cannot ask their travel agency for a combined train ticket from Germany to France. I can't either understand why my business travel agency can book the most complex journey from Europe to Asia, traveling with various airlines, but has so much trouble adding a train ticket from Stockholm to Malmö to the same booking as my flights from Madrid to Stockholm.
Finally, we see light at the tunnel and you have the proof point on www.bahn.com where you can now book international rail journeys powered by Amadeus. Look out for more to come!
What excites you about working in the rail industry?
The rail industry seems very interesting at this time. As European rail deregulation is coming, more railway companies are starting to enter new markets and open up their international distribution. It is exciting to support this change, and see how inventive and forward thinking railways are nowadays. It is interesting to get involved in their processes when trying to improve their customer's experience.
What’s your favorite travel destination?
Impossible to say, I love traveling… wherever!
What’s your favorite app?
I like Spotify very much, which allows me to listen to music when traveling. Music makes me happy :)
