Global trends impacting travel in 2018

July 10, 2018
Author: Marta Desviat

We started the year talking about the digital trends shaping rail travel. Today, we bring you wider trends that you should watch to adapt to the evolving travel industry. You can find a deeper understanding of the following trends and much more in Amadeus recent Global Report.

Political and economic trends

Growth in Asia: as we anticipated in our whitepaper 4 factors to unlock rail travel in Asia Pacific, we expect the Asia Pacific region to keep growing. The investments in infrastructure, such as new-high speed lines and the outbound tourism increase, are driving the region's growth. The challenge lies now in understanding how to boost the sale of rail travel domestic and internationally
Cyber-security: by 2021, cybercrime damages will cost the world $6 trillion annually. In this context, we are collaborating with international organizations such as A-ISACto improve the travel industry's security and customers' data. Thanks to machine learning applied to Fraud Management, we are able to detect any set of actions known as leading to fraud.

Technology trends

Application programming interfaces (APIs): are a necessity for the travel industry. They enable companies to respond quickly to travelers' needs, meaning faster development of solutions and applications. In rail travel, our RAILyourWAY modules are API connected, helping railways to modernize, change their rail inventory, pricing or reservation systems, sell other railways from their own website or connect to our travel sellers' network.

Blockchain: is a simple way of passing information from A to B in a fully automated and safe manner. Although blockchain technology is being much discussed, in reality, the technology remains at a very early development stage. However, it could transform rail travel and help the industry to standardize, building a data network to share rail information.

Messaging platforms: although the use of chatbots in the travel industry is still small, there is potential, both in terms of efficiency and cost reduction, but also as a new sales channel. We have seen already the big potential it can have for railways.

Lastly, the last trend that we would like to highlight is sustainability. Overcrowded destinations are challenging the travel and tourism industry, and together with climate change this makes one of the biggest issues for all the industry players. We are constantly engaging with organizations such as the United Nations World Tourism Organization to fight against climate change and measure the impact of our carbon footprint.
